Turn your HP Velotechnik into an electric trike

HP Velotechnik builds aluminium (7005 T6) trikes in Germany, most with suspension and a folding frame. Owners in the US, including Alan Templin (story below), ride HP trikes with a Falco in the rear wheel; on the Scorpion fs the rear suspension carries the motor weight. HP Velotechnik's documents refer to a quick-release rear wheel.

What the conversion involves

  1. Swap the rear wheel. The f7.9 arrives as a complete wheel, built in your size, with the motor, controller and sensors inside the hub. Move your cassette across, drop the wheel in and fit the torque arm.
  2. Mount the battery. Most trike owners mount the 672 Wh battery behind the seat or on a rear rack, low and central.
  3. Add the controls. Thumb throttle and a console or the Falco Flash app. Reverse and regenerative braking are set from the controls.

No cutting, drilling or welding. Most owners finish in an afternoon; any bike shop can do it.

Please read before you convert. HP Velotechnik's owner's manual says only electric assist systems expressly approved by HP Velotechnik may be fitted to its trikes, and the Falco is not on that list. Fitting a Falco may affect your HP Velotechnik warranty. That is why every HP model is marked "Call us first": we will talk through your trike before you decide.

HP Velotechnik’s own e-assist, and how the f7.9 differs

HP Velotechnik fits its own approved systems at the factory: Neodrives Z20 rear hub, Shimano STEPS mid-drives and Bafang M410, mostly 250 W, plus a 1000 W-peak S-Pedelec version of the Scorpion fs 26.

The Falco f7.9 is a 750 W, 48 V, 672 Wh electric drive that turns the bike, trike or tandem you already own into a smart eBike. The motor, controller, torque sensor and speed sensor are all inside the rear hub, so installation is a wheel swap plus a battery. It assists to 20 mph in the US (28 mph where legal), goes up to 120 miles on a charge at level 1, freewheels with zero resistance when the assist is off, and regenerates on descents. It is the same drive that powers the Three Wheels of Magic. Read what owners say in the customer stories.

Controls: pick what suits you

ANT+/BLE wireless module

Needed for wireless mode. It connects the motor to the Falco Flash app on your phone so you can set assist and regeneration levels, change modes, read the sensors and more.

Wireless module

Wired console

An eBike computer on a five-foot cable that plugs straight into the motor. No charging, no pairing: plug in, switch on, ride. It comes with a plus/minus controller for power levels, brake and wheel circumference.

Wired console

Wired plus/minus

A simple controller for raising and lowering the power level, switching between pedal-assist and regeneration, applying the brake, and reverse on trikes.

Wired plus/minus

Combinations. The wired plus/minus and the wireless module work together: set things up in the app, then ride without your phone. The wireless module and the wired console cannot be used at the same time; choose one.

Why it rides differently

  • Patented five-phase motor: zero freewheeling resistance, about 40% more power than a three-phase motor, high-efficiency assist and regeneration.
  • Torque and speed sensing: power arrives in proportion to how hard you pedal, so it feels like your own legs, only stronger. Adjust the level any time.
  • Clean installation: wireless console and plus/minus controller keep cables to a minimum.
  • Five-year motor warranty: a direct drive has no gears to wear, and we have built them since 2011.
