Turn your Catrike into an electric trike

Catrike is our most common conversion. Owners have fitted the Falco to the Road, Villager, Dumont, Expedition and Pocket. Catrike builds light aluminium spaceframes with two front disc brakes and no brake on the rear wheel, so the rear wheel is free to become a motor wheel. The one thing to check is the rear axle: Catrike moved several models to a 12 mm thru-axle around the 2019 model year.

Catrike Dumont with a Falco f7.9 rear motor wheel

How to order: three choices above.

  1. Your Catrike model. This sets your rear wheel size and axle. Not listed? Pick "Other model / not sure" and we will confirm with you.
  2. Controls. Wired plus/minus ($99), BLE wireless module to use the Falco Flash app ($149), wired console ($249), or the wireless module with plus/minus ($248) or console ($398).
  3. Cassette. Move your own cassette across ($0), or we fit a new single-speed, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11-speed cassette ($32 to $100).

The price shown is the full price for your choices: $2,295 for the system, plus controls and cassette. Thru-axle Catrikes add our $139 conversion kit. Speed limit: we ship set to 20 mph, the US road-legal limit. Need 15 mph (EU), 28 mph where legal, or an adjustable limit (+$99)? Add a note at checkout or call 877-278-6323. Shipping: $187 to the US, $212 to Canada, $420 to Europe, Australia, New Zealand and every other country. This includes the required hazmat fee for shipping the lithium battery.

Thru-axle Catrikes (about mid-2019 and later): the f7.9 wheel uses a standard solid axle, so these frames need our Custom Standard Drop-Out Conversion for Thru Axle. Pick the "thru-axle + kit" choice for your model above: the kit adds $139 and ships with your wheel. It bolts on, with no cutting, drilling or welding. Thru-axle installation guide. Not sure which axle you have? Look at the rear wheel: a thru-axle has a 12 mm bolt-through axle with no quick-release lever. Or call us.

How the f7.9 fits each Catrike

Villager (20 in rear) · Straight fit

The easiest Catrike to get on and off (12.5 in seat). Three 20 in wheels and a 135 mm quick-release rear. The f7.9 20 in wheel drops straight in; the battery rides behind the seat. See it on catrike.com.

Trail (20 in rear) · Straight fit

Folding Catrike with three 20 in wheels and a quick-release rear. A 20 in motor wheel keeps the fold compact and gives strong hill-climbing gearing. See it on catrike.com.

Pocket (20 in rear) · Straight fit

Compact Catrike for smaller riders, three 20 in wheels. Catrike dealers list a 225 lb rider limit plus about 50 lb for bags or a motor; the f7.9 motor and battery weigh about 21 lb, so it fits inside that allowance. Dealer sources disagree on the Pocket axle, so tell us your year. See it on catrike.com.

Expedition (26 in rear) · Fits, with our thru-axle conversion kit (+$139)

Touring Catrike with a 26 in rear wheel. Trikes built before the 2019 model year have a 135 mm quick-release rear and take the f7.9 straight in; 2019 and later use a 12x142 thru-axle and need the drop-out conversion. See it on catrike.com.

Dumont (26 in rear) · Fits, with our thru-axle conversion kit (+$139)

Full-suspension folding Catrike with a 26 in rear wheel on a swingarm. The f7.9 hub sits in the swingarm, so the suspension carries the motor. Thru-axle frames (about 2019 on) need the drop-out conversion. See Randy and Kim's Dumont and the step-by-step guide below. See it on catrike.com.

5.5.9 (26 in rear) · Fits, with our thru-axle conversion kit (+$139)

Folding 26 in rear-wheel Catrike. Current frames use a 12x142 thru-axle, so plan on the drop-out conversion. See it on catrike.com.

700 (700c rear) · Fits, with our thru-axle conversion kit (+$139)

Catrike's fast 700c trike, thru-axle rear. We build the f7.9 in 700c; the drop-out conversion is needed. The 700 carries a rear parking brake on some builds, so tell us your brake set-up. See it on catrike.com.

MAX (20 in rear) · Fits, with our thru-axle conversion kit (+$139)

Catrike's heavy-duty trike, rated for 425 lb rider and gear. Three 20 in wheels and a 12x142 thru-axle rear, so it needs the drop-out conversion. The high load rating suits a motor and a full battery. See it on catrike.com.

All Road (20 in rear) · Fits, with our thru-axle conversion kit (+$139)

New full-suspension Catrike (late 2025), three 20 in wheels, 1x10 drivetrain, thru-axle rear. Needs the drop-out conversion. Call us: this is a new frame and we will confirm fit before you order. See it on catrike.com.

Road / Road AR (20 in rear) · Call us first

Retired about 2020, full suspension, 20 in wheels. Bob C. rides a Road with a Falco (story below). Axle type varies by year, so tell us yours. See it on catrike.com.

Eola (20 in rear) · Fits, with our thru-axle conversion kit (+$139)

Low-cost 20 in Catrike with a 12x142 thru-axle rear. Needs the drop-out conversion. See it on catrike.com.

What the conversion involves

  1. Swap the rear wheel. The f7.9 arrives as a complete wheel, built in your size, with the motor, controller and sensors inside the hub. Move your cassette across, drop the wheel in and fit the torque arm.
  2. Mount the battery. Most trike owners mount the 672 Wh battery behind the seat or on a rear rack, low and central.
  3. Add the controls. Thumb throttle and a console or the Falco Flash app. Reverse and regenerative braking are set from the controls.

No cutting, drilling or welding. Most owners finish in an afternoon; any bike shop can do it.

Catrike dealers list a 275 lb rider limit plus about 50 lb for bags or a motor on most models (225 + 50 lb on the Pocket, 425 lb total on the MAX). Catrike's own warranty wording on third-party motors was not published on its site when we checked, so ask your dealer if you are concerned.

Catrike’s own e-assist, and how the f7.9 differs

Catrike sells its own eCAT models and an eKIT with a Bosch Active Line Plus mid-drive (50 Nm, 400 Wh battery, $3,550 for the kit). The f7.9 is a hub motor instead: a bigger 672 Wh battery, a throttle, reverse and regenerative braking, and no extra wear on your chain.

The Falco f7.9 is a 750 W, 48 V, 672 Wh electric drive that turns the bike, trike or tandem you already own into a smart eBike. The motor, controller, torque sensor and speed sensor are all inside the rear hub, so installation is a wheel swap plus a battery. It assists to 20 mph in the US (28 mph where legal), goes up to 120 miles on a charge at level 1, freewheels with zero resistance when the assist is off, and regenerates on descents. It is the same drive that powers the Three Wheels of Magic. Read what owners say in the customer stories.

Controls: pick what suits you

ANT+/BLE wireless module

Needed for wireless mode. It connects the motor to the Falco Flash app on your phone so you can set assist and regeneration levels, change modes, read the sensors and more.

Wireless module

Wired console

An eBike computer on a five-foot cable that plugs straight into the motor. No charging, no pairing: plug in, switch on, ride. It comes with a plus/minus controller for power levels, brake and wheel circumference.

Wired console

Wired plus/minus

A simple controller for raising and lowering the power level, switching between pedal-assist and regeneration, applying the brake, and reverse on trikes.

Wired plus/minus

Combinations. The wired plus/minus and the wireless module work together: set things up in the app, then ride without your phone. The wireless module and the wired console cannot be used at the same time; choose one.

Why it rides differently

  • Patented five-phase motor: zero freewheeling resistance, about 40% more power than a three-phase motor, high-efficiency assist and regeneration.
  • Torque and speed sensing: power arrives in proportion to how hard you pedal, so it feels like your own legs, only stronger. Adjust the level any time.
  • Clean installation: wireless console and plus/minus controller keep cables to a minimum.
  • Five-year motor warranty: a direct drive has no gears to wear, and we have built them since 2011.
