Best Electric Trike for Seniors Under $3,000: What to Look For

An electric trike for an older rider does not have to cost $6,000 to $9,000. Here is what matters: stability, seat height, hill help, simple gears and a real warranty.

Best Electric Trike for Seniors Under $3,000: What to Look For

Three Wheels of Magic electric recumbent trike

Short answer: a good electric trike for an older rider does not have to cost $6,000 to $9,000. Look for three-wheel stability, a low reclined seat, a motor that helps on hills, simple gears, and a strong warranty. Our Three Wheels of Magic does all of that for $2,995, complete.

Below is what to look for, in plain terms, and where the money really goes.

1. Stability comes first

Many people come to trikes after a scare on a bike. A slow stop, a wobble, a fall. A tadpole trike (two wheels in front, one behind) sits low and wide. It does not tip when you stop. You never need to put a foot down at a light.

Look for: two wheels in front, a wide track (the distance between the front wheels), and a low seat. The Three Wheels of Magic has a 29-inch track and a 16-inch seat height.

2. A seat you can get in and out of

A trike is only good if you can climb on and off it. Very low racing trikes are hard on knees and hips. For many riders, a seat somewhere around 13 to 17 inches high is a good middle ground. A parking brake that locks helps too, so the trike does not roll while you sit down.

Look for: a seat height you can test at home with a kitchen chair, and a locking brake lever.

3. A motor that helps on hills

Electric assist is what keeps people riding. It adds power when you pedal, so hills and headwinds stop being a reason to stay home. A throttle is useful too, for starting from a stop or getting home when you are tired.

There are two kinds of motors:

  • Mid-drive: the motor sits at the pedals and drives the chain. Strong on very steep hills. Wears chains and gears faster, and adds cost.
  • Rear hub: the motor is inside the rear wheel. Quiet, simple, and easy on the chain. Our Falco five-phase hub also gives you reverse and regenerative braking, and has no drag when it is off.

Look for: pedal assist plus a throttle, and reverse if you park in a garage or tight space.

4. Simple gears

Two shifters and three front rings are confusing. One shifter is easier. The Three Wheels of Magic uses a single-ring Shimano CUES 10-speed system with one trigger shifter.

5. A warranty that lasts

The motor is the most expensive part of an electric trike. Ask how long it is covered. Every Falco hub motor carries a five-year warranty.

Where does the money go on a $7,000 trike?

Premium trikes are fine machines. You pay for lighter aluminum or titanium frames, many frame sizes, full suspension, custom colors, and branded mid-drive motors, plus dealer margins. If you want those things, they are worth it.

If you want a stable, comfortable trike with good electric help, you do not need them. We make our own motor and sell direct, so the Three Wheels of Magic costs $2,995 with a 750 W motor and 400 Wh battery. See the side-by-side comparison.

A quick checklist

  • Two wheels in front, wide and low
  • Seat height you can manage (try a chair of the same height)
  • Pedal assist and throttle
  • Reverse and a parking brake
  • One shifter
  • Weight limit above your weight (ours is 275 lb combined)
  • A multi-year motor warranty
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a health condition
