Batteries are big, dense and valuable, and you don't want to just stick them anywhere. A rear rack sometimes works, but then the wires have to be extended, the weight is up high, and you can't use the rack for anything else. Introducing T-Cycle's new and improved Battery Mount! An even better way to attach your valuable, heavy battery: centered, low down, and out of the way. You'll hardly know it's there! Height and angle can be adjusted to fit just about any bike or trike on the market. CNC machined mounting clamps precision made for all the most common frame sizes. This battery mount is the super sturdy, elegant battery solution that the recumbent world has been waiting for. Works on left, right, and even both sides if you want to run two batteries. What does this do?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eThis mount allows you to mount a battery under the seat and close to the centerline of your bike or trike. This is usually the very best place to mount a battery, because it's low and centered for better stability. Mounting heavy things like batteries up high over the rear wheel often leads to handling issues. This mount was designed to solve that. We make different Battery Mounts specific to the ICE trikes. If you have an ICE rigid or rear suspended trike, we recommend the specific mounts because they are carefully designed to work with the fold (the battery winds up on top after the fold, where it doesn't interfere with anything). If you have an HP Scorpion trike, due to the complicated main tube, these mounts won't work- there's just no good place to attach. We are working on Scorpion battery mounts that attach where the HP racks do, but are reconfigurable for any Scorpion, on either the left or right side. Stay tuned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2. Where does it go?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eIt depends on the bike or trike, but on the main tube, generally just behind and under the seat. Whether it goes on the left or right side depends on the bike or trike. Most folders need the battery on the right side so it winds up on the outside after the fold. An optional extender moves things out past the chain on the right or out past other obstacles on the left. All the parts can be flipped and reversed and reconfigured to get a wide range of mounting positions on either side of your bike or trike.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e3. What kind of batteries can I put on it?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eAll sorts of them. The battery shelf is large and sturdy. We drill and tap it for some of the common batteries, like the BionX and NeoDrives that use standard bottle boss spacing. For other batteries, in shrink wrap or nylon housings, you can usually just strap them on or use zip ties. We make special, additional plates to mount unusual batteries like the BionX rear rack battery and the Falco flat batteries.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e4. What size do I need?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eWe machine clamps to exactly match the size of your main frame tube, so the size needs to be exact. When you tell us the make and model of your trike, we can pick the right clamps for you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e5. Do I need the sideways extender?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eThe sideways extender moves the vertical plate and battery shelf out 2.5 inches (6.35cm). Smaller amounts of sideways positioning can be done with custom bushings. If you need to clear a chainstay or some other obstruction by positioning the battery further out sideways, you probably need the extender. If you have an unusual situation and might need custom bushings, let us know.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e6. What about unusual batteries?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eWe have an adapter plate for larger batteries with mounting holes specific for the BionX, Falco, and Shimano rear rack batteries. The adapter plate is also useful for supporting large brick type batteries. The frame clamps are sized specifically to your trike. The vertical plate and battery shelf can be rotated to different angles depending on what is needed for your trike. The parts can be combined in different configurations, flipped over, reversed, and used on opposite sides. The combination of adjustments allows the battery shelf to be positioned at different angles and heights according to your needs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eFirst, hold the battery in the area where you would like it to go to get an idea of where the shelf, adapter plate, and frame clamp need to be.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eRemove the clamp arch, hold the clamp against the frame, and reinstall the arch.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eBe sure to route any cables over the clamp, so they don't get pinched.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eTighten the frame clamp, then adjust the angle of the vertical plate as needed.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWhen the vertical plate is positioned, install the shelf at the angle that works best.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAttach your battery to the shelf with bolts, zip ties, or straps, as needed. That's it!\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eADDITIONAL INFO\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eFrame clamps are available in all common main tube sizes: 1.125, 1.25, 1.375, 1.5, 1.625, 1.75, and 2.0 inches; and 40, 50, 54, and 60mm; and the square tubing of Greenspeed Magnum, Anura, and GT20. We can often shim to other sizes, email for more information on that. The frame clamping bolts are m6 stainless steel, so they are able to support batteries up to about 15 lbs (6.8Kg). Battery mounting holes are m5x0.8, threaded through 0.25 inches (6.35mm) mounting plate.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe battery Shelf is 5in x 2.5in (13cm x 7cm) and has 14 m5x0.8 threaded holes for attaching batteries or battery adapter plates. The holes are in 2 rows, one with bottle boss spacing and the other with the spacings used by common batteries.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIf you let us know, we can provide bolts and spacers specific to the popular BionX down tube battery. If your battery uses standard bottle boss spacing, it will probably bolt right on. For other batteries, because there are so many different kinds out there, you may need to arrange the fixing of the battery to the shelf. These mounts are very stout and can probably handle more, but due to the wide range of conditions out there, we rate them for 15lbs, which is actually a lot of battery.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe Frame Clamps are made in a variety of sizes for almost every round tube used on bikes and trikes, and the vertical Plate is highly adjustable, so it is usually possible to install this mount on nearly any trike as well as many bikes. This mount has been in use in Europe for 2+ years, and now ICE uses them for their electrified rigid rear trikes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eINSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAttachment is straightforward and only takes a few minutes. The first step is to attach the main support arm to the fender strut. Delrin shims are provided for clearance since the welds come in close.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe main support arm attaches on the right (drivetrain) side of the trike underneath the power side chain tube.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRotate the plate so the slot at the top lines up with the rack attachment point (there are two slots, one for 20 inch wheel rear triangles and one for 26 inch). All fasteners are stainless steel.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe primary attachment is to the fender strut tube. A pair of clamps attach another sideways tube. A mounting plate goes up from outside the chain up to the rear rack attachment point. A shelf attaches the the bottom of the mounting plate to hold the battery. The shelf is drilled and tapped to accept bottle boss batteries and the BionX downtube mounting rail, but other batteries can be easily mounted. The Ansmann battery system is designed to attach to a vertical plate, so it doesn't need the shelf at all. Batteries in nylon packs can be strapped to the shelf and to the vertical plate.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWe also make adapter plates for the BionX Type R (rear rack) and Falco batteries, since they have such different mountings.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe battery Shelf is 6 x 3.25in (15.25 x 8.25cm) and has 15 M5x0.8 threaded holes for attaching batteries or battery adapter plates. 13 of the holes are in 2 rows with bottle boss spacing used by many batteries.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eMounting hardware are provided for the rear rack attachment point for trikes with and without a rear rack.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eBoth the vertical plate and the shelf are made from 1\/4 inch (6.35mm) thick aluminum. This means it is both very sturdy and easily drilled to modify needed for your particular battery system.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eCompatible with all rigid ICE trikes from 2010 onwards. We make a different kit for the suspended trikes. Earlier rigid trikes may work, but we haven't had a chance to test them. The frame clamping bolts are M6 stainless steel, so they are able to support batteries up to about 15 lbs (6.8Kg). Battery mounting holes are M5x0.8, threaded through 0.25 inches (6.3mm) mounting plate.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe battery Shelf is 5 x 2.5in (13x7cm) and has 14 M5x0.8 threaded holes for attaching batteries or battery adapter plates. The holes are in 2 rows, one with bottle boss spacing and the other with the spacings used by common batteries.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIf you let us know, we can provide bolts and spacers specific to the popular BionX down tube battery. If your battery uses standard bottle boss spacing, it will probably bolt right on. If not, try the next size down, and if that is still too large, use no shim at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the arm is properly fitted inside the pivot tube, configure the cap to the same size and install it from the other side. Position the arm so the outer end is parallel to and underneath the power side chain tube. Rotate the plate so the slot at the top lines up with the rack attachment point. If you have a rear rack, use the short spacer and bolt to attach to the threaded hole in the rack attachment point. What's better about this idler is it's not spongy, and carries the chain on the bushings instead of the edges of the sideplates, so it's more efficient. The bearings are  better, and in the case of the Elites, much, much better. And then there's the bling, especially on the Elite. One piece plastic is cost effective, but no bling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eThe efficiency thing is important. Every bit of squishy in your drivetrain costs you, and there's no squish here. Carrying the power side on a cog keeps the edges of the plates from rubbing in opposite directions on an  idler bed as the chain bends and then straightens again. The stock idler isn't real squishy, it's better than most, but it does squish and it does cause plate rubbing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2. If it's so good, why don't all the racers use them?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eA lot of racers do use them. John never did because he wanted to show off the bikes as they came stock, which is fine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e3. What about noise?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eA toothed idler has a different noise, true. It's part of the not being squishy thing. On a Bacchetta, the main source of noise is the light contact with the idler in the smaller gears. Chain lube plays a role, too, light lubes tend to let the chain clatter. Most people find there is some more noise in some gears initially, but that it goes away and is the same or quieter overall after a few hundred miles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e4. Why no cog on the return side then?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eThree reasons for that. The biggest is that when you shift the front deraileur, the amount of chain wrapped around the front changes. If an Over\/under idler were cogged on both sides, the extra chain couldn't come and go from the takeup at the rear deraileur. The second reason is the side angle of the return chain. The return chain runs on the outside, to let the power side run straight. Making the return chain come in as sideways as it does to a cog would invite jumping and noise. Running it against an abrasion resistant plastic plate is better overall. Since the tension in the return side is so low, the rubbing isn't a big factor. Lastly, cost. A plain bed is less expensive than titanium or aluminum, even if it is made from really tough urethane.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e5. I get the bling and the efficiency. What else is there?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eThe stock idler is pretty durable, but these idlers generally outlast them by several times. When cleaning, be sure to wipe the bearing area carefully. The bearings are sealed and will last a long time if dirt, water, and solvents don't get in. It consists of an Over\/Under idler and a new spacer. If you have a first year Bacchetta, you will need a new, slightly larger chainkeeper. We make a nice matching keeper for this. One end of the shaft looks like a round headed Allen bolt, but the other end  has internal threads. The idler is allowed to float side to side on the shaft so it can track with the chain as it shifts.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThere are two occasional issues with the idler mount. One is that the plating on the shaft can eventually wear off. When it does, the shaft is uneven and the idler doesn't float well anymore. The other is that on first year bikes, the frame tab can get bent from strenuous pedaling or from the bike falling over and hitting something. It's possible to go without anything, but your chain is likely to hit the ground on bumps. The chain can also sway around a lot without anything to control it. The biggest reason, though, is to prevent the chain from going under the rear wheel if you ever miss a shift up front. If the chain ever gets under the rear wheel, it's not pretty. It's very hard not to go down fast if that happens. That's why Gardner recommended people always have something to keep the return chain up. If you have the stock little chaintube, the answer is \"Nope, just bolt it on and go\". Determining the ideal length of chain is pretty straightforward. First, shift to something other than the largest cog in bacl. Next, shift to the largest chainring in front.Then shift carefully to the largest cog in back. This \"big-big\" gear combination determines the chain length you need. When you're in \"big-big\", the deraileur should be pulled forward and slightly below horizontal, to about 4 o'clock. If it's angled down more than that, say 4:30, or 5:00, you have more chain than you need. Bend a link back on itself to see how the angle changes. If your main tube is curving where you'd really like to put the idlers, it is unfortunately not possible to clamp there. For the clamps to grip strongly, the fit is very exact, and there's just no way to predict that on a curving tube.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eGenerally, it's valuable to allow the power side idler to float inwards as much as possible. The position of the chainline in the lowest gear is usually very close to the level of the outside of the main tube. For that reason, these mounts are designed to put the idler mounting options in as close to the frame as possible. This means the idler mounting holes in the clamp on mounts are either above or below the main tube and not near the centerline.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIf it is absolutely necessary to have the idlers somewhere near the centerline of the main tube, or to have them radically above or below the main tube, we do offer an Adjustable Idler Mount.
