It includes the idler and a specially sized spacer to align the idler with the stock chainline.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e3. I see it has bolts. Can I take it apart?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eYes, these idlers are designed to be disassembled if needed. They are held together with 3 stainless bolts. We don't recommend taking them apart unless they have many thousands of miles on them and you have reason to believe the bearings are finally worn out. They are precision made and there are some steps to the disassembly\/reassembly that are important to follow carefully. Since the bearings are pressed into the core, you will need a bearing press if you ever need to remove them. With any kind of reasonable care, the bearings should last tens of thousands of miles, though, and it would be rare to replace them. With a press, even a simple one, it's easy to do.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e4. If I ever wear out the cog, can I replace that?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eYes, we can replace the cog assembly if that's ever necessary. We haven't had to do that yet, but with so many idlers out there, we're sure it will happen some day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e5. What about efficiency and noise?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eWe make exclusively toothed idlers for power side applications because they are both quieter and more efficient that way. There are a host of technical reasons for this, but the biggest and most basic one is that chains are designed to be carried by the bushings. It is a nice, big flat area designed for forces to be applied to it. Chains are not meant to be carried on the edges of their sideplates. It just doesn't work as well. Since the core of the idler is all metal, from the chain bushings through to the bearings, there is no sponginess to soak up power. The chain sideplates aren't used to transmit power down into the idler, so there is no rubbing contact like there is on plain bedded idlers. Noise is a complicated issue, but we expect you'll find these idlers are quieter than other idlers. The cog is specially shaped to smoothly and repeatably mesh with the chain, and unless the chain is being pulled sideways quite a bit, there will be very little rubbing. We always recommend allowing your power side idler to float side to side with the chain as it shifts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e6. The fold on the Gekko twists the chain rather severely right as it goes through the idler. On the stock idler, the chain can rotate in the (extra wide) groove. Since our idlers carry the chain on a metal cog, the chain can't twist. In all cases the cog and frame are extensively machined out for lightness.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eBearing Care: The bearings are shielded, not sealed. Shielded bearings have less rolling resistance because the seal, while super close, doesn't actually rub. True sealed bearings are rare, when people talk about \"sealed bearings\", they usually actually mean shielded. These are top quality shielded bearings and will last a long time. What kills bearings is solvent, dirt, and water intrusion. As long as you don't spray things on the bearing faces, you will be OK. Regular amounts of dust and dirt getting on the outsides of the bearings won't be a problem, as it's hard for it to get past the shields (the shields really do come *very* close to the bearings). When you clean them, what you want to do is gently wipe dirt off and away from bearings, rather than rub aggressively and push the dirt past the shields. There is no need to lube the bearings, the special grease that's in them is what they need.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eNo maintenance should be required other than occasional cleaning with a paper towel or soft cloth. We recommend keeping solvents and soap and water away from the bearings, they don't need aggressive cleaning and solvents and soaps tend to go after the grease. It's water resistant, but solvents and soaps are harder to deal with.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eYou will probably never need to disassemble your idler. What's better about this idler is it's not spongy, and carries the chain on the bushings instead of the edges of the sideplates, so it's more efficient. The bearings are  better, and in the case of the Elites, much, much better. And then there's the bling, especially on the Elite. One piece plastic is cost effective, but no bling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eThe efficiency thing is important. Every bit of squishy in your drivetrain costs you, and there's no squish here. Carrying the power side on a cog keeps the edges of the plates from rubbing in opposite directions on an  idler bed as the chain bends and then straightens again. The stock idler isn't real squishy, it's better than most, but it does squish and it does cause plate rubbing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2. If it's so good, why don't all the racers use them?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eA lot of racers do use them. John never did because he wanted to show off the bikes as they came stock, which is fine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e3. What about noise?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eA toothed idler has a different noise, true. It's part of the not being squishy thing. On a Bacchetta, the main source of noise is the light contact with the idler in the smaller gears. Chain lube plays a role, too, light lubes tend to let the chain clatter. Most people find there is some more noise in some gears initially, but that it goes away and is the same or quieter overall after a few hundred miles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e4. Why no cog on the return side then?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eThree reasons for that. The biggest is that when you shift the front deraileur, the amount of chain wrapped around the front changes. If an Over\/under idler were cogged on both sides, the extra chain couldn't come and go from the takeup at the rear deraileur. The second reason is the side angle of the return chain. The return chain runs on the outside, to let the power side run straight. Making the return chain come in as sideways as it does to a cog would invite jumping and noise. Running it against an abrasion resistant plastic plate is better overall. Since the tension in the return side is so low, the rubbing isn't a big factor. Lastly, cost. A plain bed is less expensive than titanium or aluminum, even if it is made from really tough urethane.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e5. I get the bling and the efficiency. What else is there?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"\u003eThe stock idler is pretty durable, but these idlers generally outlast them by several times. When cleaning, be sure to wipe the bearing area carefully. The bearings are sealed and will last a long time if dirt, water, and solvents don't get in. It consists of an Over\/Under idler and a new spacer. It is a drop in replacement for the stock idlers.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eFirst year Bacchettas had a slightly smaller diameter idler, with a slightly smaller chainkeeper. If you have a first year Bacchetta, you will need a new, slightly larger chainkeeper. We make a nice matching keeper for this. All other years do not need a new chainkeeper, but you can upgrade any year bike if you wish.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe Bacchetta idler mount consists of  a special shaft with internal threads. One end of the shaft looks like a round headed Allen bolt, but the other end  has internal threads. The internally threaded end is secured to the chainkeeper and the frame tab by a regular 6mm Allen that pulls from the other side. The idler is allowed to float side to side on the shaft so it can track with the chain as it shifts.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThere are two occasional issues with the idler mount. One is that the plating on the shaft can eventually wear off. When it does, the shaft is uneven and the idler doesn't float well anymore. The other is that on first year bikes, the frame tab can get bent from strenuous pedaling or from the bike falling over and hitting something. If the tab is not flat, the idler mount won't be straight and the idler won't float.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIf you have a worn shaft, you can order a new one from Bacchetta, or use one of our stainless shafts. It's very hard not to go down fast if that happens. That's why Gardner recommended people always have something to keep the return chain up. If you have the stock little chaintube, the answer is \"Nope, just bolt it on and go\". Determining the ideal length of chain is pretty straightforward. First, shift to something other than the largest cog in bacl. Next, shift to the largest chainring in front.Then shift carefully to the largest cog in back. This \"big-big\" gear combination determines the chain length you need. When you're in \"big-big\", the deraileur should be pulled forward and slightly below horizontal, to about 4 o'clock. If it's angled down more than that, say 4:30, or 5:00, you have more chain than you need. Bend a link back on itself to see how the angle changes. The mount is designed to bolt up to the particular frame tab you have. Somewhat counter intuitively, on Tour Easys, Gold Rushes, and Ti Rushes, the mount attaches to the inside of the frame tab (this keeps the idler float range lined up with the chainline).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the mount is attached, you remove the chainkeeper, drop the chain onto the idler, and reinstall the chainkeeper. On all but the Fold Rush, that's all there is to it. Serious Easy Racers riders always seem to come around to this idler kit, and never look back. The Sport version uses a Sport Series return idler with molded Nylon sides, a special urethane chainbed, and an ABEC 7 steel bearing. The Elite version uses an Elite Series return idler, with a see through CNC machined aluminum core and hybrid ceramic bearing. Either idler will last tens of thousands of miles. No one has actually worn one out yet. The original versions of this kit used a brass idler bushing that would eventually wear out, but we make them from stainless steel now and no one has managed to do one in yet. This is a very durable, basically carefree idler kit.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe mounting hardware on all kits is made from CNC machined aluminum, anodized black. All the hardware is stainless steel. The idler shaft is a precision ground stainless bushing supported on a 6mm bolt. Wiping down the idler every once in a while is a good idea. As long as you take a little care to keep solvents and detergents from getting into the bearing, everything will last for a long time. If you ever do want to replace the bearing, it is very easy to do. If your main tube is curving where you'd really like to put the idlers, it is unfortunately not possible to clamp there. For the clamps to grip strongly, the fit is very exact, and there's just no way to predict that on a curving tube.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eGenerally, it's valuable to allow the power side idler to float inwards as much as possible. The position of the chainline in the lowest gear is usually very close to the level of the outside of the main tube. For that reason, these mounts are designed to put the idler mounting options in as close to the frame as possible. This means the idler mounting holes in the clamp on mounts are either above or below the main tube and not near the centerline.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIf it is absolutely necessary to have the idlers somewhere near the centerline of the main tube, or to have them radically above or below the main tube, we do offer an Adjustable Idler Mount. Right now, we only make them in two sizes, 1.75 and 2.0 inches. This is an extra cost option, but does give a wider range of mounting positions. Unfortunately, to do this necessarily requires increasing the minimum closeness to the outside level of the main tube by about 3\/8 inch (10mm). First, the idlers: with low drag bearings and carefully machined ultra durable cogs, with teeth profiles specifically designed for idler applications. Nice looking, too, particularly the Elite version, with it's no holds barred functional elegance. They truly make your drivetrain something to be proud of. Second, the all new mount. The idler runs on a stainless bolt, with a stainless coupler bushing and stainless fixing bolt. No more aluminum shaft- stainless all the way. And thirdly, the chainkeeper is an amazing piece of easy to live with engineering. No more struggling with lining up idlers and chains and chainkeepers all at once. You simply install the idler, then lift the chains into position. The chainkeeper slides on at the end, locking in place with it's own pinch clamp. The idler rides on the sleeve, and the bolt goes through the teardrop idler mount tube and out the other side. A nut on the outside holds it on, and an aluminum sleeve inside the mount tube keeps it from crushing. Sturdy enough, but not particularly elegant. That, and the aluminum sleeve the idler runs on is softer than the idler bearing. Over time, the idler will wear a groove and stop floating. The new mount is all stainless, with an industry standard 8mm shaft. A specially made 8mm threaded stainless coupler nut fits up inside the idler mount tube and serves to anchor the idler shaft. The coupler nut is locked to the mount tube by a stainless button head bolt from the non drive side. It has a very finished look, with no protruding threads and nothing rustable. The shaft is very hard and it would take a very long time to measurably wear it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e3. Yes, sure, they are. But hey, a little bling, a little speed, a little less to wear out- add it up over thousands of miles and you're way ahead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eINSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInstallation involves removing the old idler and mounting parts using a 6mm allen wrench and a 13mm end wrench. It does a lot of things and makes a lot of things very simple. For instance, since it clamps on to the head of the stainless idler bolt, it's not necessary to capture it on the inside, against the idler mount. This means the idler can float to the inside a little farther, making the chain just that much straighter when you're climbing in low gear.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWhen you go to install the idler, the chainkeeper isn't there- it doesn't have to go on until you're all done. So, no more messing with lining up idlers and chains and chainkeepers as you try to get the idler bolt into the mount. Simply mount the idler, then put on the chains, and then put on the chainkeeper. Much easier. And lastly, whenever you want to do something to your chain, all you have to do is pop the chainkeeper off. Everything else stays on- the idler, the mount, everything. Remove the chain, clean it, put a new one on, whatever- and then pop the chainkeeper back on. Seems like a small thing, but it makes things much easier and removes a considerable source of frustration.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIdler bearings are industry standard 608 size (8mm ID, 22mm OD, 7mm thick). Elite Series bearings are stainless hybrid ceramics, and Sport Series bearings are ABEC 7 rated steel bearings. Shielded bearings have less rolling resistance because the seal, while super close, doesn't actually rub. True sealed bearings are rare, when people talk about \"sealed bearings\", they usually actually mean shielded. These are top quality shielded bearings and will last a long time. What kills bearings is solvent, dirt, and water intrusion. As long as you don't spray things on the bearing faces, you will be OK. Regular amounts of dust and dirt getting on the outsides of the bearings won't be a problem, as it's hard for it to get past the shields (the shields really do come *very* close to the bearings).
