What sort of special features?

The first feature is that one side (generally, the side you attach the Accessory Mount arm to) is threaded for an m5 bolt. This makes it super easy to attach to it. The second feature is there is a machined ring around the top of the second bolt hole. If you are using a Cateye clamp to attach to a tube, this machined ring plugs into the boss on the Cateye clamp and makes the connection to the clamp very secure.

3. What is the angle adjustment range?

The angle of the mast can be adjusted from straight up (perpendicular) down to 45 degrees. The mount can be attached facing backwards or forwards, so the effective range is 45 degrees forward to 45 degrees backward. There are 3 pairs of holes for mounting bottle cages on the mast. Two pairs are down low (where you usually want your bottles to be) and one pair is higher. The higher pair is used to mount the second bottle cage on the acute (inside) angle side when the mast is angled all the way down to 45 degrees.

3. You don't even have to take the shifter apart, just unscrew the bolt, and while holding things in place, slide in the Micro Mount and tighten it. This puts the fixed side (where the Micro Mounts need to go) on the OUTSIDE of your handlebars. Since your hands come up the outside of the handlebars to go from the brakes to the shifters and back, having the mount on the outside would be in the way. It would also put things like throttle controls on the outside where they aren't easy to operate with your thumb. The solution is simple- turn the shifters around. If you are unfamiliar with shifters or are uncomfortable taking things apart, we recommend finding someone to help you that's done things like this before. It's not hard, but there are some details you want to pay attention to. Installation goes like this: release the handlebar clamp inside the shifter, pull the shifter up, slide the clamp arm over the cable housing, push the clamp onto the end of the handlebar, and put the shifter back the way it was. Here are the detailed steps to install:

While pedaling, shift into the gear where the lever is vertical. Then, without pedaling, shift so the lever is horizontal. This puts slack in the cable, which makes the shifter easier to take apart.

Examine the shifter. One side of it rotates with the shifter arm, and the other side does not. There will be two bolts, one on each side. Remove the bolt from the fixed (non shifter arm) side.

Swing the shift lever aside. You should now be able to see down inside the handlebar to the clamp that holds the shifter in place. Loosen the clamp bolt 1 (one!) turn. This should be enough to release the clamp. You don't want to overloosen the clamp as the parts may fall down inside the handlebar. Just barely loose is all you need.

Gently pull the shifter base up out of the handlebar. The handlebar grip will be gripping the cable housing, but a slow steady pull will allow you to pull it up enough to get it out. Once it's out, there's no need to pull it any further.

There are two pinch bolts in the new clamp. They cross the long curved slot in the clamp. The cable housing needs to slide through that slot, so temporarily remove the bolts.

Orient the clamp so the open end will point slightly inward towards the middle of the trike when the clamp is on the end of the handlebar. With the clamp in that orientation, slide the cable housing through the slot in the clamp, all the way to the inside where the cable tunnel is.

Push the cable housing in to the tunnel and push the clamp down onto the end of the handlebar. Most handlebar grips will happily push down the 1/2 inch (12.7mm) that the clamp requires. Push the clamp down until the end of the handlebar is flush with the top of the clamp. Reinstall the clamp bolts and lightly clamp it to the handlebar while you reinstall the shifter.

Put the shifter clamp back into the end of the handlebar, and while gently pulling on the shifter cable, push the shifter base back into the handlebar until it seats. Align the shifter base so the swing of the shifter arm is where you want it and tighten the clamp bolt down inside the handlebar.

Put the shifter arm back on the base. There is usually a square or D shaped protrusion on the arm that needs to go back into a corresponding pocket on the side of the base. Rotate the arm and snap it into the pocket. Reinstall the bolt that holds the arm to the base. Pull the shifter arm back to vertical to retension the cable.

Loosen the bolts on the new clamp and install the L arm. Adjust the height and angle of the arm and the clamp, then tighten the clamp bolts. Durable. Functional. If you don't have one, the Multi-Purpose Accessory Mount is the best thing that hasn't happened to your bike. But chances are this isn't your first time here, because few people buy just one. We don't condone it, but this lightweight mount is so strong, you can lift your bike by it. What's amazing, though, is that with its dual pivoting legs that come in three sizes, it can mount anywhere. Seriously. Add one or two Extender Kits and you'll suddenly find yourself with more room than you know what to do with! The triangulating legs cut out the shaking that flimsier mounts create, and allows for insane versatility.

Big thanks to Ja Yoe for the videos. How do I know if an Accessory Mount will work on my bike?

As long as you have a round or nearly round tube to attach to that is less than 1-1/4in (31.8mm) you should be able to attach an Accessory Mount to it. You will need two points of attachment, one for each leg of the mount. The two points don't have to be on the same tube, and the distance between the two points can vary quite a bit. Most people put their mounts on the same tube with the mounting points 2-3 inches (5-8cm) apart. Depending on the particular situation and the things you have to work around, all kinds of things are possible.

2. How easy is it to install?

If you are just attaching it to a single, unobstructed tube, it's super simple. We use Cateye brand plastic band clamps for attachment. We modify them to add a metal bushing to move the mounting point out to half the width of the Accessory Mount's mid tube. You simply snap the Cateye clamps around the tube on your bike and attach the ends of the Accessory Mount arms to the Cateye clamps. If there are things in the way, you can adjust the arms on the Accessory Mount to work around them.

3. How strong are they?

Pretty strong. You could probably pick your bike up with them. The real question is "How much weight can they take?". They can easily take a light, or a GPS, or a phone, or a mirror. They can take two lights as long as they aren't both big heavy ones with giant batteries inside. The Accessory Mount arms form a triangle with the tube they are mounted on. The base of the triangle determines the stiffness. As long as the ends of the arms aren't super close together (less than an inch and a half, or 4cm or so), the triangle will be very stiff.

4. What size range of tube can I attach to?

Cateye clamps come in sizes from 1/2 inch (12mm) to 1-1/4 inch (31.8mm) in 1/8 inch (3mm) increments. They come with shims to let you fine tune the fit within that range. To clamp to things smaller than 1/2 inch, we recommend using a rubber shim. McMaster-Carr sells thick wall rubber tubes with 1 inch outer diameters and inner diameters down to 1/4 inch (1cm). A short section of material like this, sliced into a C shape, works great. We keep several sizes of this material in stock and can cut shims for a nominal fee.

5. Can I attach to things that are not round?

It depends. The Cateye clamps can handle some ovalization, to around a 2 to 3 ratio of width to depth. You can sometimes use a larger clamp and shim the thinner part of the oval. It is also possible to attach the ends of the Accessory Mount arms to something else- a bottle boss, a brake boss, all kinds of things. There are also other clamps that may handle strongly oval tubes better, like P clips, though they aren't as stable as the Cateye clamps.

6. Can I get a wider tube across the middle?

I want to attach lots of stuff. The tube across the middle is 30mm wide. We have 15mm extensions that can be added to the outside of the mount. It is possible to replace the tube in the middle with something wider, but all the widths of everything else also change. It's been done, and with good results, but it takes a bit of fiddling to do it. The extensions are very easy.

7. On upright bicycle stem mounting applications, we recommend the 75x100mm or 100x100mm arm combinations for maximum range. If you are mounting on a fork blade, we recommend the 50x75mm setup. For some Highracer Recumbents, the 100x100mm combination allows you to put a light down low and right in front of the BB shell.

ADDITIONAL INFO

Accessory Mount arm lengths are 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm. Several other RAAM teams have used Accessory Mounts as well.

A note on arm lengths: For most recumbent applications, we recommend the 50x75mm or 75x100 arm combinations. All bolts are stainless steel. The arms can be independently rotated 360 degrees and locked in any position. The Cateye clamps are non scratch plastic. The horizontal tube is 1 inch (25.4mm) diameter so nearly any bike accessory fits on it. The distance between the arms is 30mm, so if necessary, you can straddle a 1-1/8 (28.6mm) tube (a common mast and derailleur post size).

A note on amazing lightweightness: the 50x75mm mount is only 53 grams.

Accessory Mounts pretty much fit somewhere on everything. Since the clamp is open ended, it’s easy to install, even with everything else already there. Another double ended clamp holds a T bar for your accessories. The two clamps are joined in the middle by a third L shaped tube. The third tube in the middle lets you articulate the mount, much like your elbow allows you to move your arm in and out and swing it around.

You simply install the mount, move things around to where they need to be, and lock the clamps. The clamps lock tight enough you can easily pick up your bike or trike by the T bar.

Cockpit Mounts are available as kits and as individual pieces. We are starting out with two kits, one that's a Indirect Steer Horizontal Attach Kit designed for Catrikes and other Direct steered trikes. In individual parts, there are two types of clamps, two types of articulation tubes, and a T bar that’s asymmetric to maximize positioning options. We will be introducing additional clamps and other system parts in the coming months. The idea is to create a versatile, mix and match system for attaching whatever you need, wherever you need.

This Cockpit Mount Kit is designed to attach to a 1.0in (25.4mm) Horizontal Tube, as found on Catrikes, or a 7/8 tube, as found on some other direct steered trikes.

A 90 degree elbow tube allows you to rotate the attachment clamp up or down on the horizontal steering arm. The 5in (125mm) wide T Bar attaches to the other side of the elbow tube. You can rotate the T Bar around on the vertical part of the elbow in order to move the T bar in and out.

You can position the Cockpit mount anywhere forward and back on the steering arm that you would like. Most people like their Cockpit Mount either close to their controls or further forward near the head tube. When the T Bar is close to the head tube, it will only move in a small arc as you steer. This is a good place for a mirror, because the mirror won't move very much as you turn.

By putting the right amount of tension on the clamps, you'll find it's very easy to move things around and find the ideal position for everything. Once you've determined your ideal position, just tighten the clamps to lock everything in place.

The T Bar is 7/8in diameter, so anything that's made to attach to a handlebar will be happy there. To attach a mirror inside the T Bar, simply remove one end cap and install the mirror as if it were on the end of a regular handlebar.

If you have a direct steered trike with a less than 1 inch horizontal steering arm (early Actionbent, for example), we can substitute a 7/8in (22.2mm) clamp. Since the clamp is open ended, it’s easy to install, even with everything else already there. Another double ended clamp holds a T-bar for your accessories.

This Cockpit Mount Kit is designed to attach to a 7/8in Vertical Tube (22.2mm) tube (the diameter of your handlebars where the controls attach). The mounting clamp is 1/2in (12.7mm) thick, so all that's required is 1/2in of reasonably straight tube to clamp to. Because of the strength of the clamps, we don't recommend clamping to Carbon Fiber tubes. Other than that, if you have 1/2in of clear space on a 7/8in tube that's either straight or not curving very much, you can attach this mount. In most underseat steering applications, you'll attach it just below where the brake lever clamps on.

The double ended clamps hold the centers of the tubes 2in (50.8mm) apart. With the two clamps in this kit joined by a central pivot tube, the T Bar where your accessories will go can be anywhere in the range about 0 to almost 4 inches (101.6mm) away from the tube you clamp to. The T Bar is 5in (125mm) wide and 9 in (225mm) tall. It's asymmetric so you can point it inboard or outboard. The link/pivot tube is 1.5in (40mm) tall. You are free to mix and match and rearrange the clamps, pivot tube, and T Bar to get the perfect location for your accessories.

We designed a new low profile clamp that only requires half an inch (about 12.7mm) of room. If you don't have that much room already, you can usually create it pretty easily.
